Ex-footballer and sports speaker David Platt is best known for his role as midfielder and coach for a number of British and Italian teams including Arsenal, Manchester City and Sampdoria. Platt began his career as an apprentice at Manchester United only to later move to Crewe Alexandra where he began building a reputation as a prolific goal scoring midfielder. At the age of 22, Platt signed for Aston Villa where he gained the attention of the then England manager Sir Bobby Robson, under whom Platt soon went on to make his International debut. In just his first season at Villa Park Platt helped the club achieve promotion to Division One and was voted the PFA Players’ Player of the Year the following season. At the 1990 FIFA World Cup, Platt intensified his continental reputation by scoring goals with both head and feet, whilst exhibiting great technique, passing abilities, and high work rates. His performances in Italy earned him a move to Serie A club Bari in 1991.
In 1992 after a successful season for Platt, he moved to Juventus, where he spent one season in which he helped the Turin club win the UEFA Cup. Platt continued scoring goals for England, playing in Euro 92 and 96. Despite his efforts, England failed to qualify for the 1994 FIFA World Cup. In 1993, he moved to Sampdoria where he stayed for two seasons before he returned to England to join up with Arsenal. Platt played with the London club for three years, being part of the Arsenal side that won the Premier League and FA Cup Double of 1998, before his retirement in that same year.
After the end of his playing career, Platt took up management. David Platt was at the helm of Sampdoria, Nottingham Forest, Manchester City and Pune City along with his most successful management exploit with England U21s.
Since retiring from both playing and management David Platt has gone on to work as a sports speaker and TV pundit, particularly for the England under 21 games, following his management of the team early in the 2000’s.
