Terry Venables, often referred to as “El Tel ” is a former English football player, manager, pundit, part time crooner and after-dinner speaker extraordinaire. During the 1960s and 70s, Venables played for various clubs including Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur and Queens Park Rangers as well gaining two caps for England and going on to manage the his national team too. Born in Dagenham, Essex in 1943, Terry Venables signed a professional contract with Chelsea making his senior debut at the age of just 17 against West Ham. Following a string of impressive performances showcasing his early potential and prowess, Terry was later made the captain of Chelsea by the age of 19, the youngest ever captain in the English Premier League. During his time at Chelsea Terry was a part of the team who won promotion from the Football League Second Division as well as winning the Football League Cup.
Venables moved to fellow London club, Tottenham Hotspur where he inspired the team to glory in the FA Cup being awarded an FA Cup winner’s medal and trophy in 1967. Terry Venables is the only English player to have represented his country at all possible footballing levels, i.e. Schoolboy, Youth, Amateur, Under 23’s, Football League and Full International. This is an achievement that, due to changes in the footballing structure in the UK, will never be matched. Venables enjoyed further promotion glory when he played for Queens Park Rangers earning promotion from the Football League Second Division.
Following his playing career, Terry Venables turned his hand to management and was appointed manager of Crystal Palace. As Crystal Palace manager, Venables built a young team of mostly youth team players and free transfer signings which the media dubbed the “Team of the Eighties”. Venables led Crystal Palace to two promotions in the space of three years before being appointed as manager of Queens Park Rangers. Once again, Terry Venables inspired QPR to the Football League Second Division title and consequently promotion.
Venables impressive start to his managerial career, Venables gaining a good reputation as a manager with his successes at Crystal Palace and QPR and this attracted offers from some of Europe’s most prestigious clubs. In 1984, Venables took the role of manager at top Spanish club, Barcelona. Making an immediate impact, Terry Venables led the team to win the Spanish Championship in his first year in charge and to the European Cup Finalthe following year. A Copa de la Ligatrophy while in charge of Barcelona further propelled Venables’ reputation amongst fans. Individually while in charge at Barcelona FC, he won the World Soccer Manager of the Year award and the Don Balón Award.
In 1987, Venables was appointed manager of former club, Tottenham Hotspur FC whom he led to a record breaking eighth FA Cup win and the FA Community Shield in 1991. 1994 saw Venables appointed as England manager, a great honour for any manager and he successfully lead the team to the semi-finals of Euro’96competition , only to be beaten in “sudden death” penalty shootout after Gareth Southgate famously and agonisingly failed to convert for England.
Terry has several interests outside football, mainly in the leisure industry. He has also ventured into the world of literature and media entertainment, having written the following:-
