Aitor Karanka, the former professional footballer and manager of EnglishChampionship club,Nottingham Forest.
During an illustrious career spanning over the course of 13 seasons, Karanka appeared in a staggering 275 La Liga most remembered for playing at Spanish clubs, Athletico Bilbao and Real Madrid. Karanka played predominantly as a central defender possessing the ability to adapt to occasionally play as a Left back. In 2015, his first full season in charge at the club he led Middlesbrough to the Championship Play off Finals at Wembley Stadium, agonisingly missing out on promotion with a 0-2 loss to Norwich City. In the club’s penultimate game of the season, Karanka notably sent Middlesbrough’s goalkeeper forward for an added-time corner kick in search of a historic win, with game evenly poised at 3-3 away to Fulham. With the goalkeeper out of position, the opponents scored a winner through Ross McCormack, which sent Watford into the Premier League and threatening Middlesbrough’s own chances of promotion. Karanka and his team recovered however as they qualified to the play-off final after a 5 -1 aggregate win over Brentford.
In August of 2015, having seen the progress of the club under the managerial leadership of Karanka, he was rewarded with a new four-year contract. It took only the following season for Middlesbrough to reap rewards from the decision as Karanka’s team recovered from the heart-breaking Play off Final defeat from the previous season to secure automatic promotion back to the top flight of English football, The Premier League, 7 years after their last appearance in the league.
